Who Korah is

Exodus names Korah among Izhar's sons and lists Assir, Elkanah and Abiasaph as his sons. Numbers introduces him as a descendant of Izhar, Kohath and Levi. He joins Dathan, Abiram and others in challenging Moses and Aaron, arguing that the whole congregation is holy. Moses answers that the Lord will show whom he has chosen and asks Korah and his fellow Levites whether they also seek the priesthood. Korah then gathers the congregation against Moses and Aaron at the tabernacle entrance.

Historical setting

Numbers describes the earth swallowing households and people associated with Korah, and fire consuming the 250 men offering incense. Its later census recalls Korah among those swallowed, but immediately states that his sons did not die. The censers become an altar covering and a warning about offering incense without Aaronic descent. When the congregation complains the next day, a plague follows; Aaron makes atonement and stands between the dead and the living until it stops. These events remain distinct from the later lives of Korah's descendants. The genealogies also differ: 1 Chronicles 6:22 names Amminadab between Kohath and Korah, whereas 6:37–38 names Izhar. Exodus groups Korah's sons together; Chronicles 6:22–23 uses a succession of son relationships.

How the story is told

Korah's rebellion becomes a remembered warning. Zelophehad's daughters explicitly distinguish their father's death from participation in Korah's company, and Jude invokes Korah alongside Cain and Balaam; the KJV calls him Core there. Yet the family name also appears in accounts of service: Chronicles names Korahites keeping the tabernacle gates and later praising the Lord with other Levites. Read with the statement that Korah's sons survived, these passages distinguish the rebel's story from the continuing history of his family.
