Opening stop: My brother's keeper, Genesis 4:3
The word brother comes seven times in the first eleven verses of this chapter. God warns Cain before anything happens, telling him sin lieth at the door. Verse 8 says Cain talked with Abel his brother, but it records nothing that was said. Abel's blood crying from the ground becomes a picture Hebrews returns to (Hebrews 12:24).
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord.
King James Version
Cain and Abel bring offerings from their work in the fields and with sheep. God regards Abel and his offering, while Cain becomes angry when his own is not regarded. A warning about doing well and sin at the door precedes Cain's killing of Abel. God confronts Cain, announces the loss of the ground's yield and a wandering life, then gives him a mark to protect him from being killed. The account follows Cain's family through a city, several occupations and Lamech's violent speech. It closes with the births of Seth and Enos and people beginning to call upon the Lord's name.
