Opening stop: Would God all were prophets, Numbers 11:26
Joshua appears early as Moses's minister, climbing the mountain with him and staying at the tabernacle when Moses left it (Exodus 24:13, 33:11). Here the young aide tries to protect his master's standing. Moses corrects him and widens the circle: he wishes the spirit on everyone. Joel 2:28 later promises the spirit on all flesh, and Peter says that promise was being kept at Pentecost (Acts 2:16-17).
But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.

A complaint is followed by fire at the camp's edge; Moses prays and it stops. Further craving for meat leads the people to recall Egypt's foods and complain about manna. Moses tells the Lord that the burden is too heavy for him and asks to die if it continues. The Lord promises to share the burden with seventy elders and to give the people meat for a month. The elders receive the spirit and prophesy. Eldad and Medad, two of the registered men, prophesy in the camp; Moses answers Joshua's request to stop them by wishing all the Lord's people could be prophets. Wind brings quail around the camp, and the people gather them in great quantities. While the meat is still between their teeth, a severe plague strikes. The place is named for the burial of those who craved, and Israel moves to Hazeroth.
