Opening stop: Be strong and of a good courage, Joshua 1:9
Joshua hears this charge four times in one chapter, three times from God and once from the people (Joshua 1:6, 7, 9, 18), and Moses had given it to him before (Deuteronomy 31:7). This is the man who, back at Kadesh, urged Israel not to fear the people of the land (Numbers 14:9), then waited thirty and eight years while that generation died out (Deuteronomy 2:14). Even a proven leader is told again. The courage rests on a promise of presence, not on Joshua's record, and within two verses he is giving orders to be ready in three days.
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

After Moses dies, the Lord tells Joshua to lead Israel across the Jordan into the promised land. The repeated call to courage is joined to God's promise of presence and the command to keep the law given through Moses. Joshua responds by ordering preparations and reminding the Reubenites, Gadites and half-tribe of Manasseh to help the other Israelites. The chapter closes with a pledge of obedience that includes a death penalty for rebellion. These commands and assurances address Joshua's leadership of Israel in this account.
