Opening stop: Grasshoppers, Numbers 13:16
Numbers lists him as Oshea the son of Nun (Numbers 13:8), and Moses calls him Jehoshua. Exodus already knows him as Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' servant (Exodus 33:11). The King James prints the name Jesus in two verses whose setting points to him: the tabernacle brought into the land (Acts 7:45), and the rest that generation did not enter (Hebrews 4:8). The spies' route runs through Hebron, where Abraham had bought a grave for Sarah (Genesis 23). In the King James text, giants appear only once before this, in the brief account just before the flood (Genesis 6:4).
These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua.
King James Version
Moses sends twelve tribal representatives from Paran to examine Canaan. He asks about its people, defenses, soil and trees, and tells them to bring back fruit. After forty days they return with grapes, pomegranates and figs. They acknowledge the land's abundance but describe strong inhabitants and fortified cities. Caleb urges the people to take possession; the men opposing him say they cannot overcome its inhabitants. The narrator calls their account an evil report. Their final comparison with grasshoppers expresses their own fearful assessment, including their claim about how the inhabitants viewed them.
