Opening stop: The youngest, with the sheep, 1 Samuel 16:6
Israel's first king had stood out partly for his height, taller than anyone from the shoulders up (1 Samuel 9:2). This time the Lord rules out height. David is a great-grandson of Ruth and Boaz (Ruth 4:17). Ruddy comes back when Goliath looks David over and disdains him (1 Samuel 17:42). The Spirit comes on David, and the very next verse says the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul (1 Samuel 16:14). David will later spare Saul because Saul too is the Lord's anointed (1 Samuel 24:6).
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.
King James Version
The Lord sends Samuel to Jesse at Bethlehem to anoint a new king. Samuel is warned against judging by appearance, and David is brought from tending sheep after the other sons have passed before him. Samuel anoints him, and the Spirit of the Lord comes upon David. Saul, troubled after the Lord's Spirit departs from him, seeks a skillful musician. David enters his service and brings relief through his harp playing.
