Opening stop: What seek ye?, John 1:35
What seek ye? are the first words Jesus speaks in John's Gospel, and they are a question. He asks nearly the same thing in the garden, Whom seek ye? (John 18:4), and at the empty tomb, whom seekest thou? (John 20:15). Jesus later speaks of twelve hours in the day (John 11:9), so the tenth hour came late in it, and staying that day may have run into the evening. One of the two is Andrew. The other is never named.
Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

The chapter opens with the Word, who is in the beginning with God, through whom all things are made, in whom is life and light that darkness does not comprehend. A man named John is sent to bear witness of the Light and is said not to be that Light. The Word is made flesh and dwells among men. Questioned by priests and Levites, John denies that he is the Christ, Elias or that prophet, and calls himself a voice crying in the wilderness. He says he baptizes with water and that one stands among them whom they do not know. The next day he points to Jesus as the Lamb of God and reports seeing the Spirit descend like a dove. Two of John's disciples follow Jesus; one is Andrew, who brings his brother Simon, whom Jesus names Cephas. Jesus finds Philip, and Philip finds Nathanael, who calls Jesus the Son of God and the King of Israel.
