Opening stop: On King David's mule, 1 Kings 1:28
Adonijah, the next of David's sons after Absalom, had already declared himself king at a feast by En-rogel, with Joab and the priest Abiathar on his side (1 Kings 1:5-9). Nathan had once been sent to name the baby Solomon Jedidiah, because of the Lord, who loved him (2 Samuel 12:24-25). Now he moves with Bathsheba to hold David to his word. Riding the king's own mule made the choice public. Gihon lay down from the city, near enough that Adonijah's guests heard the noise as they finished eating (1 Kings 1:41).
Then king David answered and said, Call me Bath-sheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king.

As David grows old, Abishag the Shunammite is brought to care for him. Adonijah announces his intention to become king and gathers support from Joab and Abiathar. Nathan and Bathsheba bring the succession crisis before David, who confirms his promise that Solomon will succeed him. David orders Solomon taken on his own mule to Gihon, where Zadok anoints him. The celebration reaches Adonijah's gathering as news of a rival coronation. His supporters disperse, and Adonijah takes hold of the altar's horns. Solomon offers him conditional protection and sends him home.
