Opening stop: Out of whom went seven devils, Luke 8:2
Luke uses seven spirits elsewhere for a last state worse than the first (Luke 11:26), and Mark 16:9 also names the seven devils, but neither says more about them. Ministered is the word Jesus used of himself: not to be ministered unto, but to minister (Mark 10:45). Luke brings her in as someone new, just after an unnamed woman which was a sinner (Luke 7:37). No Gospel says she is that woman, or Mary of Bethany (John 11:1-2).

Jesus travels city by city with the twelve and with certain women who had been healed, named as Mary called Magdalene, Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, with many others who minister of their substance. He tells the parable of the sower, explains the seed as the word of God, and follows it with the candle that is not hidden and a warning to take heed how they hear. When his mother and brethren cannot reach him, he says his mother and brethren are those who hear the word of God and do it. Crossing the lake, he sleeps through a storm, is woken with the cry that they perish, rebukes the wind and water and asks where their faith is. In the country of the Gadarenes a man who lived among the tombs is met; the devils give the name Legion, ask to enter the swine, and the herd runs into the lake. The people, afraid, ask him to depart, and the healed man is sent home to tell what God has done. Back across, Jairus asks him to come to a dying daughter; on the way a woman with an issue of blood twelve years touches his garment and is healed. Word comes that the girl is dead, and he takes her by the hand and she rises.
